You are not alone

Nervous patients can take dental care one manageable step at a time

Nervous patients feel worried about dental care for many different reasons. You may remember a painful experience, dislike needles or sounds, worry that treatment will be uncomfortable, feel embarrassed about your teeth or fear hearing unexpected news. Some nervous patients cannot identify one particular cause—the appointment itself simply feels overwhelming.

Whatever your reason, our approach to nervous patients begins with patience and respect. Dr Joseph Paino and the Enhance Dental team will listen first, explain what they find in plain language and involve you in each decision. Your first step can be a conversation and assessment; treatment only proceeds with your consent.

Dental anxiety is common and can range from uneasiness to dental phobia. For independent general information, visit the Better Health Channel guide to dental anxiety and phobia.

Nervous patients are welcomed without judgment

Nervous patients are welcome even if it has been years since their last dental visit. Fear, health, family commitments, finances and difficult past experiences can all make it hard to return. We will not reprimand you or make you feel ashamed.

Our focus is your current concern and the safest, most realistic way forward. We can separate urgent needs from matters that can wait, explain alternatives and divide care into smaller stages when appropriate.

“My aim is for patients to feel heard, understand what is happening and leave thinking the appointment was much easier than they expected.”Dr Joseph Paino · Principal Dentist

Comfort built around you

Small choices help nervous patients feel more in control

We ask nervous patients what has helped—or made things harder—in the past. Together we can choose practical ways to make your appointment feel more predictable and manageable.

1

Agree on a stop signal

Raise your hand whenever you want us to pause. You remain involved and in control throughout the appointment.

2

Explain before we proceed

You can ask to see images, hear a simple overview or receive more detailed information—whichever helps you most.

3

Move at a comfortable pace

We can pause for breathing, adjust the chair, take breaks and check how you are feeling before continuing.

4

Reduce injection anxiety

Topical numbing cream, careful technique and CALAJECT support a slow, controlled delivery of local anaesthetic.

5

Use helpful distractions

Music, television and headphones may help shift your attention while we maintain the communication needed for safe care.

6

Bring support

A trusted person may accompany you where appropriate. Some sedation options require a responsible adult escort.

Nervous patients do not have to solve everything at one visit

Nervous patients can start with a gentle consultation. Tell us what worries you, and we will help you choose the next step.

A predictable first visit

What nervous patients can expect at Enhance Dental

  • We listen first: tell us your concerns, past experiences, priorities and what would make the visit easier.
  • We agree on boundaries: you can ask to begin with conversation only, and we establish a clear stop signal.
  • We assess carefully: with permission, we examine the area and use digital radiographs when clinically indicated.
  • We explain the findings: you can see relevant images and hear what is urgent, what can wait and what options may suit you.
  • You decide: anticipated fees, benefits, limitations and alternatives are discussed before planned care begins.

For nervous patients, an examination may reveal that the situation is simpler than feared. If more care is required, a written sequence can make the process feel less overwhelming.

For patients worried about injections

How CALAJECT may help nervous patients with injection anxiety

Needle anxiety is common among nervous patients and is never dismissed. We can apply topical anaesthetic to numb the surface of the gum before local anaesthetic is given. CALAJECT then supports delivery at a carefully regulated flow, helping Dr Paino use a slow, controlled technique.

Individual sensations and anaesthetic response vary, so no injection can be promised to feel completely painless. We allow time for numbing to take effect, check the area before treatment and encourage you to tell us immediately if you feel discomfort.

When reassurance alone may not be enough

Sedation options for nervous patients who need more support

Some nervous patients benefit from additional support beyond environmental and communication strategies. Depending on your health, anxiety, treatment and support arrangements, Dr Paino can discuss whether prescribed medication, sleep dentistry or referral for sedation assessment may be appropriate.

Sedation is not the same as general anaesthesia and does not remove the need for local anaesthetic. It also carries responsibilities: medical review, preparation instructions, fasting when directed, a suitable adult escort and restrictions on driving or important decisions afterwards.

Personalised support

Every nervous patient has different concerns

“I am embarrassed.”

We focus on your health now and what can be achieved from here. You will receive explanations and encouragement, not criticism.

“I am afraid it will hurt.”

We discuss anaesthetic, check numbness, use an agreed stop signal and respond if you experience discomfort.

“I need to know everything.”

We can explain the stages, show relevant digital images and answer questions before you decide.

“Too much detail makes me anxious.”

Tell us. We can keep explanations simple while still giving you the information required for informed consent.

“I dislike feeling out of control.”

You can pause treatment and agree on how information, positioning and breaks will be managed.

“I only want today’s problem managed.”

We can identify the urgent priority, explain any immediate risk and discuss staged options for the future.

Urgent symptoms: If facial or neck swelling affects breathing or swallowing, bleeding will not stop, or there is serious facial trauma, call Triple Zero (000) or attend an emergency department. For toothache, swelling, a broken tooth or another dental emergency, call Enhance Dental and mention that you are anxious so we can discuss the earliest suitable appointment.

Helpful answers

Nervous patients: frequently asked questions

Select a question for a clear, reassuring answer.

Will I be judged about the condition of my teeth?

No. Many people delay dental care because of fear, embarrassment, cost, difficult past experiences or competing responsibilities. We will listen to what has happened, focus on what can be done now and help you take one manageable step at a time.

Can I book a visit just to talk first?

Yes. Tell our team that you are nervous and would like a gentle consultation. Your first appointment can focus on listening, examining only what you are comfortable with and discussing options. Treatment is not started without your agreement.

What should I tell you when I book?

Tell us what worries you most, whether you have had a difficult dental experience, how long it has been since your last visit and whether you would prefer a particular time of day. This helps us allow an appropriate appointment and prepare the team.

Can I ask the dentist to stop during treatment?

Yes. You remain in control. Before treatment, you and Dr Paino can agree on a simple stop signal, such as raising your hand. We can pause, explain what is happening, adjust your position or take a break.

How does numbing cream help?

Topical anaesthetic cream can be placed on the gum before a local anaesthetic injection. It helps numb the surface tissue. We also use careful technique and allow time for the anaesthetic to work before beginning treatment.

What is CALAJECT?

CALAJECT is a computer-controlled system that delivers local anaesthetic at a carefully regulated flow. It is designed to support a slow, controlled injection. Individual sensations vary, so we do not promise a completely pain-free injection, but many nervous patients value this gentler approach.

Will you check that I am numb before treatment?

Yes. We allow time for the local anaesthetic to take effect and check the area before starting. Please tell us immediately if you feel discomfort or if you have previously had difficulty becoming numb.

What relaxation methods are available?

The approach can include a calm appointment, unhurried explanations, an agreed stop signal, breaks, music, television, breathing techniques, topical numbing cream and CALAJECT. Where appropriate, Dr Paino can also discuss prescribed medication or referral for sedation.

Do you offer sleep dentistry or IV sedation?

Sedation may be considered for suitable patients and procedures. It requires individual assessment, medical-history review and appropriate arrangements. Depending on the type of sedation and your needs, care may involve a suitably qualified sedation provider or referral. You will receive specific preparation, escort and recovery instructions.

Can I take something to relax before the appointment?

Do not take another person’s medicine or change prescribed medication yourself. If medication may be helpful, it must be discussed with the dentist or your medical practitioner in advance. Some medicines affect driving, decision-making, breathing and the need for an escort.

Can someone come with me?

Usually, yes. A trusted support person may help you feel more comfortable, subject to privacy, safety and space in the treatment room. An adult escort is essential for some forms of sedation and must follow the instructions provided.

What happens at a first appointment for nervous patients?

We begin by listening. With your permission, we assess your concerns, examine your mouth and take digital radiographs only when clinically indicated. Dr Paino then explains the findings, priorities, suitable options, likely fees and what could happen if treatment is delayed.

What if I only want the urgent problem treated?

Tell us your priority. We can focus on diagnosing the immediate concern and explain what is needed now, what can reasonably wait and what longer-term choices are available. Your treatment plan can be divided into manageable stages.

What if I have not visited a dentist for many years?

You are welcome. The first goal is to understand your current health and concerns. We will avoid blame, explain the findings in plain language and work with you on a realistic plan.

Can nervous patients have emergency dental care?

Yes. Toothache, swelling, trauma and broken teeth can feel especially overwhelming. Tell our team that you are anxious when you call so we can combine prompt assessment with a calm approach. Appointment availability varies, and severe swelling affecting breathing or swallowing requires urgent medical help.

How long will my appointment take?

It depends on the purpose of the visit and the care required. Let the team know that you are nervous when booking so an appropriate appointment can be arranged. We aim to explain the planned stages and avoid making you feel hurried.

Can I wear headphones or watch something during treatment?

Often, yes. Music, television or another suitable distraction can make an appointment feel easier. Tell us what helps you, while understanding that the team must still be able to communicate safety instructions when needed.

Will costs be explained before treatment?

We explain anticipated fees for the proposed care before treatment begins wherever possible. After assessment, you can ask questions, compare suitable options and decide how you would like to proceed. HICAPS is available for eligible private health insurance claims.
