Invisalign FAQ
Straight teeth no braces can use Invisalign to treat a vast majority of patients. Adults, adolescents and teenagers may be suitable. It works for a wide range of people whose teeth are too crowded or have spaces between them, as well as for those whose teeth may have shifted after having worn braces in their youth. Invisalign can also be combined with other dental treatments.
Invisalign aligners are made from a very thin high quality medical grade clear plastic, so they are nearly invisible. Even close up, most people do not notice you are straightening your teeth – unless you decide to tell them!
Invisalign® uses 3-D computer imaging technology to show you the complete treatment plan from the initial position to the final desired position before treatment even starts. As soon as you are happy with the computer simulation, a series of custom-made “Aligners” are produced. Each “Aligner” moves teeth incrementally and is usually worn for two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved. The computer simulation can also be used to estimate how long your treatment will take. In both clinical research and in dental practices throughout the world, Invisalign has been proven effective at straightening teeth.
Typically the Invisalign treatment duration is similar to braces. An average time frame is 9 to 15 months. During Treatment Once your computer modelling (Clincheck) is approved by you, Enhance Dental will schedule regular appointments – usually once every three months. This way you can be sure your Invisalign treatment is progressing as planned.
With Invisalign, by using the computerised treatment software, often teeth are not removed. Generally teeth are not removed when you have invisalign treatment if your teeth are mildly crowded. No removal of teeth often means much less discomfort, reduced costs, quicker treatment and a fuller smile.
Most people experience a temporary feeling of pressure for a few days at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. It is a sign that Invisalign® is working sequentially moving your teeth to their final destination. This presure feeling typically goes away a couple of days after you insert a new Invisalign aligner in the series.
Like all orthodontic treatments, Aligners may temporarily affect the speech of some people, and you may have a slight lisp. However, as your tongue gets used to having Aligners in your mouth, any lisp or minor speech impediment caused by the Aligners should disappear. Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing and flossing. About 22 hours of wear per day.
Unlike traditional wires & brackets, you can eat a wide variety of foods while having Invisalign treatment because you remove your Invisalign aligners to eat and drink. However, a diet that is high in sugars and involves frequent snacks should be avoided.
Also, it is important that you brush your teeth after each meal and prior to re-inserting your Invisalign aligners to maintain proper oral hygiene.
In order to prevent your teeth moving or relapsing after Invisalign treatment is completed it is recommended that you wear retainers. After Invisalign treatment is completed most patients wear clear plastic retainers at night only. Although many types of orthodontic removeable and fixed retainers are available, we have found the retainer of choice is made by Invisalign® and is called ‘Vivera’ retainers. These are a great solution as they do not obstruct your ability to brush and floss your teeth properly, are comfortable to wear and protect the enamel of your teeth from very common night time grinding, Removable retainers only need to be worn while sleeping.
If you have had braces in the past and have not been wearing retainers your teeth may have moved or relapsed. We have successfully treated hundreds of patients that have been in this situation using Invisalign treatment as an alternative to wearing braces again.
